What do the small / medium / large terms in the individual report represent?

In our individual reports we like to keep things simple so it is easy for the employee receiving the feedback to identify where they need to improve. One of the ways we do this is to use the terms 'Small / Medium / Large' for the amount of improvement required.

Generally, the exact boundaries for these are not that important, instead what IS important is which areas need more improvement than others. By grading as Small, Medium or Large the individual can quickly assess the one which requires the highest priority. i.e. a category marked Small is lower priority that a category marked Large.

However, if you are interested in exactly how they are calculated, the small-medium-large bands are set in proportion to the size of the scale:

  • The size of the scale is calculated by subtracting the minimum value in the scale from the maximum value
  • Small is shown if the desired improvement is less than or equal to the size-of-the-scale * 0.125
  • Else, Medium is shown if the desired improvement is less than or equal to the size-of-the-scale * 0.325
  • Else, Large is shown

Putting that into practice, imagine a scale of 1 to 5:

  • The size of the scale is 5 - 1 = 4
  • A desired improvement of less than or equal to 0.5 (4*0.125) is shown as Small
  • A desired improvement of more than 0.5 but less than or equal to 1.5 (4*0.375) is shown as Medium
  • A desired improvement of more than 1.5 is shown as Large
